Dalam Loka Palace: Tracing the Glory of the Sumbawa Sultanate through the Largest Stilt House in Asia

Dalam Loka Palace is the largest stilt house in Asia. Built in 1885, it served both as a royal residence and the throne hall of Sultan Muhammad Djaluddin III. Constructed entirely of wood, the palace stands as a grand stilted structure crowned with a magnificent twin roof. As a palace of an Islamic sultanate that once flourished in its era, Dalam Loka is rich in symbolic meanings and Islamic values. One of its most significant features is the 99 round teakwood pillars, which symbolize the Asmaul Husna the 99 beautiful names of Allah SWT.

The construction of the palace took 9 (nine) months and 10 (ten) days, symbolizing the length of a mother’s pregnancy. Additionally, the 17 (seventeen) steps of Dalam Loka Palace represent the total number of rakaat performed in the five daily prayers.
